Spring Session- Presentation and Sample Code

The Spring Framework Session at the Pune Java Meet was presented by Shaivya Easwaren. She is a member of the Java Center of Excellence at Cognizant and she spoke about the need for Spring and its various features. If you missed the session or are 100s of miles away from Pune, you can still check out the presentation and the code for the sample app she demonstrated during the session.

SpringFrameworkSessionJavaMeetMost queries from the audience revolved around the specifics of AOP and why one should adopt Spring over competing frameworks. Struts came up in the discussion repeatedly along with queries of what exactly is meant by a light weight container. The term light weight container had got some participants wondering if Spring requires a J2EE server/container at all. Shaivya clarified that Spring requires a J2EE server and will run on any of J2EE server.

* Download the Spring sample app
* Download the Spring presentation

Here are some other Spring resources recommended by Shaivya:

* Download Spring 1.2.7 with dependencies
* Spring framework documentation and API
* Manning Book: Spring in Action

To try out the app, you just need to add the spring jar file to the lib folder, and any dependencies, like log4j.xml or the Jakarta commons JAR files in case you want to implement AOP.

The next Java meet will be held as always on the last Sat of the month, i.e. 27th May 06. Details coming soon.
