JavaOne Notes, Plans And Session Picks

James Gosling recently wrote "JavaOne coolness is getting over the top. A fair number of hotels are already sold out. For the past several years we've been back on a track of annual serious escalation." So it looks like JavaOne 08 will be bigger and better than in previous years.

Unlike on previous occasions, this time round I have booked my sessions early. However JavaOne is as much about networking as it is about learning, so not sure how many sessions I will be able to attend. My plan is to attend several JavaFX and RIA sessions. Ajax and RIA technologies are still moving at a rapid pace and there's no clear industry direction as yet. I hope the sessions will shed more light on where rich applications are headed. Groovy and Grails is another area of interest for me and I have marked a number of those sessions as well.

My tech session proposal didn't make it but I would be speaking on the panel at the Java Champions BOF 5501, 6.30 PM, 7th of May. Am looking forward to the BOF and to various other meetings as regards IndicThreads.com, IndicThreads Research and of course the IndicThreads Conference On Java Technology 2008 to be held in late Nov / early Dec 08 in Pune, India.

There's also a Java User Groups BOF I intend to attend. Listening to views from community members from various nations should be interesting and informative. Asia and particularly India has a humongous number of Java users but not a very active Java community, I hope the learnings from the JUG meet will help in IndicThreads better contributing to building a Java community and to Java Developer User Groups In India. The session "Writing the Next Great Java Technology Book" looks like new content for JavaOne.

The General Sessions generally have hype, demos and announcements. These can be fun if the speaker does not indulge in just praising his own company and products. The CommunityOne event seems to be growing and there's more content and more buzz around the event this year. It's great that Sun is creating a platform for all open and free software.

Overall it looks like JavaOne 08 will be educational and fun. The tough part is in traveling around the world to get the conference and back. I will be writing regularly from JavaOne and will keep you updated on sessions and all the other action at the show. Would be happy to meet up with IndicThreads readers at JavaOne.
