Digital signature mimics a pen-paper signature. When we sign on a piece of paper using a pen, we vouch for something. We stand guarantee for something. For example, when we sign a cheque, we commit that we would honor the payment. Barring the case of cheque bouncing, this commitment works. Digital signatures attempt to do the same thing in electronic transactions. Great confusions about the term digital signature exist, and hence a quick clarification about the technology would help. |

Sun Microsystems Inc. plans to cut up to 6,000 jobs, or 18 percent of its global work force. The company would also be splitting its software division into three new business groups. One will handle Sun's Java programming language, open-source middleware and database offerings. Another will be responsible for Sun's Solaris operating system, which is used to run servers. The third will focus on developing programs for "cloud computing" services delivered over the Internet.

Over the last few decades, software applications evolved from character mode terminal applications , to desktop applications, to client/server (network enabled desktop) applications, and now to Web applications. Client/server applications brought distributed computing to reality first. One of the key differentiators for these client/server applications is connectivity – they connected to the server over a network and received and sent data over full duplex network connections and had access to realtime or near realtime data, depending on the network latency. The server could push a message to the client anytime. |
