Understanding Agile: 1-2-3 and you are agile!

Agile is one of the rarely understood but regularly misunderstood concepts in software development. The problem is perhaps that there are a confusing number of views, practices and jargon around agile. In the software world when you talk of adopting a technology you normally talk of adopting the entire thing. But with agile there are so many practices and classifications within the concept that most of us are never sure as to what is agile enough.

JavaOne 2006 Java EE 5, Seam, the rise of NetBeans and more
15th May - NetBeans Day was held a day prior to the JavaOne show. The response was great with the hall at the Argent hotel packed to capacity. NetBeans has improved drastically over the past year or so and that improvement was showing through the enthusiasm of the crowd that had turned up.

It's funny how software tool dev teams make the same mistakes that we as individuals commit in our day to day lives. NetBeans had the early advantage and was well established by the time Eclipse emerged. The NetBeans team perhaps got complacent and soon NetBeans ended up being completely eclipsed by the nicer, cleaner and faster Eclipse.
Java and the Emperor's New Clothes

JavaEmperorNewClothesThe Emperor's New Clothes is a popular fable. The story has its appeal not just because it's funny but because it is believable. The concept is relevant especially in case of technology. It's so difficult to stay abreast of what's new and real in the tech world, that we often have to believe swindlers who claim to make cloth that's invisible to a fool.

When will Oracle Application Development Framework (ADF) become open source?

When I first read Oracle's announcement "Oracle donates ADF Faces to Apache", I sort of jumped the gun and thought that Oracle had open sourced the entire Application Development Framework (ADF) and not just ADF Faces. That's when I started writing this blog entry, to share the good news with fellow Java developers. ADF Faces becoming open source is good news but it's nowhere near the news "ADF becomes open source"

Make your own Java newsreader

XML feeds are the way today to keep a tab on what's happening in the blogosphere as well as to know about site updates and new additions. I had heard about two popular open source feature-rich Java APIs to deal with the feeds, ROME and Informa but could never really savor them.

IT Survivors - Staying Alive In A Software Job

Before I started working for myself, I spent some years in some of the top IT companies in India and still have many friends working in various software companies. I wrote a blog Recruiting like crazy, about the same time last year about how Indian companies are recruiting like there's no tomorrow and the possible consequences. However I was avoiding writing this particular piece as it seems like an unpatriotic thing to do, to tell the world how bad the working conditions in software companies in India have become. And there's always the risk of excerpts being used out of context to bash up IT in India.

The Indirect India Effect On Global Software Sales

A few days back I was talking to a friend who is in a senior marketing role at a big J2EE vendor. Our conversation moved to how important India was for sales in the J2EE market.

Openworld Day 4 - 'Sun' Day

Although I am at 'Oracle' Openworld, I happened to spent most of the day listening to the Sun guys, Scott McNealy and James Gosling.

OpenWorld Day 2-3: BPEL, Fusion and JDeveloper

The X-treme weekend workshop sessions were a shade disappointing as the instructors in most cases just have a 20 min intro, provide some lab assignments and after that only come in if you get stuck. The sessions were lacking on explanations and hand holding for new users.

Oracle OpenWorld Day 1 - Xtreme weekend - EJB3 and Annotations
Considering Oracle's recent acquisitions and Oracle's growing presence in the Java world, this year's Openworld has a strange combination of events and sessions. The organizers would have had a tough job balancing content on Oracle Fusion Middleware and the Oracle Database with sessions for those coming from the Peoplesoft and JD Edwards world.
Open Source CMS project in trouble

OpenSourceCMSMamboIn an earlier blog I had discussed as to when a PHP CMS is a better option than a Java CMS. TheServerside.com had later referred to the blog in the thread Ask TSS: Do any Java CMS/Portals match the PHP ones?

How to become an outstanding software developer?
Are you interested in pursuing "something in computer science" as a career ? Knowing the basics is essential to any developer, top-notch or otherwise. Here are the factors that I feel are critical to being a quality software developer.

Will AJAX bring up a different kind of software developer?
From what I have read of AJAX, the people who can do a good job at AJAX need a good understanding of not only the divs, iframes and Javascript on the client side but also the business functionality and how it works on the serverside.
Testers vs Coders
SoftwareTestersvsSoftwareProgrammers
Few sporting duels can match the excitement of duels that happen everyday between software programmers and software testers.

Till date I haven't worked on a single project in which testers and programmers haven't disagreed regularly.

Java Interview Questions
The tech job market is very active these days, particularly in the developing world. Techies seem to be jumping jobs left, right and center.

Naturally the most discussed topics in developer circles are jobs and job interview questions.
Is OpenSource volunteer based or employee based?
Think of open source and most of us have visions of developers doing selfless work in their free time and contributing only because of their passion for the technology and a burning desire to learn.
Expect JDeveloper to grow at an Unexpected pace
JDeveloper10gNowFreeOracle recently announced that JDevloper 10g will now be free. A free JDeveloper I think is a far bigger announcement than what it might seem.
